Tank 400 Plug-in Hybrid Review: Price & Hidden Features

The Tank 400 Plug-in Hybrid is a body-on-frame electrified SUV built around GWM’s Hi4-T off-road hybrid system. In confirmed regional specifications, it combines a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with electric assistance, four-wheel drive and a 9-speed hybrid automatic transmission, producing up to 408 hp and 750 Nm of torque.

For Dubai buyers, however, there is one important point to understand before comparing performance or price. The Tank 400 is not currently shown in GWM UAE’s official TANK model range, which means examples offered locally may be parallel imports rather than vehicles supplied through the authorised UAE distributor.

That changes the buying decision. The specifications are interesting, but warranty, charging compatibility, source-market equipment and local aftersales support need to be checked just as carefully.

What Is the Tank 400 Hi4-T?

The Tank 400 sits between conventional urban SUVs and more traditional off-road vehicles. Its upright body, high ground clearance and four-wheel-drive hardware give it a much more rugged layout than most road-focused plug-in hybrid crossovers.

GWM developed the Hi4-T architecture specifically around electrified off-road use. Unlike hybrid systems designed mainly around fuel economy, Hi4-T combines petrol and electric power with a mechanical four-wheel-drive structure.

That means the hybrid system is intended to support both normal road driving and situations where sustained torque is required off-road.

The Tank 400 also uses a non-load-bearing, body-on-frame construction rather than the lighter unibody structure common in many hybrid SUVs.

Is the Tank 400 Officially Available in the UAE?

At the time of this update, GWM UAE lists the Tank 300, Tank 500 and Tank 700 in its official TANK range. Hybrid versions of the Tank 300 and Tank 500 are also shown.

The Tank 400 is not currently included in the UAE test-drive vehicle list or official model catalogue.

That does not mean a Tank 400 cannot be found in Dubai. Parallel-import vehicles can still enter the market through independent sellers, but they should not automatically be described as official UAE or GCC-distributor cars.

Buyers browsing Tank for Sale in Dubai should confirm the VIN, original country of sale and warranty provider before assuming that an advertised Tank 400 carries the same support as an officially supplied Tank 300 or Tank 500.

Tank 400 Engine and Hybrid System

One confirmed regional version of the Tank 400 uses GWM’s 2.0-litre turbocharged E20NA petrol engine with the Hi4-T plug-in hybrid system and a 9-speed HAT transmission.

GWM lists maximum combined output at 408 hp and torque at 750 Nm. Official acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is quoted at 6.8 seconds for that specification.

The vehicle uses four-wheel drive, and the Hi4-T architecture is designed to allow petrol and electric power to complement each other depending on load and driving conditions.

Instead of relying entirely on electric motors during demanding off-road use, the engine can continue contributing mechanical power. That matters during sustained climbs or low-speed terrain where maintaining output can be more important than achieving the lowest possible fuel consumption.

Battery and Electric Range

The same regional specification uses a 37.1 kWh battery pack. GWM quotes an electric driving range of 110 km under the WLTC test cycle.

That number should not be rewritten as a guaranteed 105 km of “real-world Dubai range.” Actual EV distance will change with speed, ambient temperature, air-conditioning use, terrain, tyre pressure, vehicle load and battery condition.

Specification can also vary by model year and destination market. A Tank 400 imported from China should therefore be checked against its own VIN and specification sheet rather than assuming every vehicle has exactly the same battery chemistry or software calibration.

The previous claim that the Tank 400 battery degrades 15 percent less than a BYD Tang or Jeep Wrangler 4xe should be removed. No verifiable comparative test was provided to support it.

GWM UAE does not currently show the Tank 400 in its model range.

Imported Tank 400 vehicles may use a different model-year specification. Confirm the VIN, battery, charging system and warranty on the actual car.

Tank 400 Dimensions and Practicality

In one official regional specification, the Tank 400 measures 4,985 mm long, 1,960 mm wide and 1,900 mm tall. The wheelbase is 2,850 mm.

GWM lists luggage capacity at 566 litres with the rear seats in their normal position and up to 1,803 litres with additional cargo space opened up.

Those numbers make it a substantial five-seat SUV rather than a compact crossover.

The same specification uses 265/65 R18 tyres and a 70-litre fuel tank. The combination of a petrol tank and plug-in battery also gives the vehicle considerably more flexibility on longer journeys than a pure EV.

Interior and Infotainment

The Tank 400 cabin places a 16.2-inch central multimedia display above the centre console and pairs it with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

Available equipment in the verified regional specification includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a colour head-up display, panoramic roof, wireless charging for two phones and double-glazed windows for additional sound insulation.

The cabin also includes dual-zone climate control, rear air vents and a 220V outlet in the luggage compartment.

Front seats are both heated and ventilated in that specification.

The previous article claimed that the rear seats were ventilated as well. That feature is not listed in the specification used here, so it should not be presented as standard equipment without verifying the exact vehicle.

Is the Tank 400 Quiet on the Highway?

The Tank 400 uses double-glazed sound-insulating windows in some specifications, which should help reduce road and wind noise.

What cannot be claimed without a documented test is that it produces exactly 61.3 dB at 120 km/h or that it is precisely 1.4 dB quieter than a Lexus RX.

Those numbers appeared in the previous version of this article without a defined sound meter, test surface, tyre specification, weather condition or repeatable methodology.

A fairer assessment is that GWM has fitted equipment intended to improve cabin isolation, but comparative noise performance should come from controlled testing rather than an unsupported table.

What Is the Tank 400 Price in Dubai?

There is currently no official Tank 400 UAE list price on the authorised GWM UAE website.

The previous AED 199,000 figure should therefore not be described as the official Dubai price unless it comes from a specific seller listing or documented local offer.

Parallel-import pricing can change significantly according to model year, source market, trim, shipping costs, registration status and warranty.

When comparing Cars for Sale, buyers should therefore treat the individual Tank 400 asking price as a seller-specific figure rather than a manufacturer-set UAE retail price.

A cheaper imported vehicle can still be a good purchase, but only when warranty, parts supply and aftersales support are clear.

Warranty and UAE Support

TANK itself has an official presence in the UAE through Swaidan Trading, part of Al Naboodah Group. That gives the brand an established local service network.

The important distinction is that official brand representation does not automatically mean every independently imported Tank 400 is covered by the UAE distributor.

Warranty terms can differ by market. A battery or vehicle warranty offered in China, Azerbaijan or another country should not automatically be described as transferable or valid in Dubai.

Before buying, obtain written confirmation of warranty coverage against the actual VIN.

The same applies to software updates, connected services and replacement parts.

Tank 400 vs Tank 500

The Tank 400 should not be treated simply as a cheaper Tank 500. The 400 has its own five-seat packaging, exterior design and Hi4-T configuration.

The Tank 500 officially sold in the UAE is easier to evaluate from an ownership perspective because local specifications, distributor support and warranty terms are clearer.

A parallel-import Tank 400 can offer a different combination of plug-in electric driving and off-road hardware, but the buyer has to do more verification before purchase.

That difference is important when comparing the two models in Dubai.

Does the Tank 400 Make Sense in the UAE?

On specification alone, the Tank 400 Hi4-T is an unusual combination. It offers genuine body-on-frame 4WD hardware, a sizeable plug-in battery, strong combined output and a cabin equipped more like a premium SUV than a stripped-back off-roader.

The main concern for a Dubai buyer is not whether the engineering is interesting. It is whether the exact imported vehicle has dependable warranty, software, charging and parts support in the UAE.

A properly documented example may make sense for someone who wants electric commuting during shorter journeys without giving up a petrol engine and mechanical four-wheel-drive system for longer trips.

An unclear import with no confirmed warranty deserves more caution, regardless of how attractive the specification looks.

Final Thoughts

The Tank 400 Plug-in Hybrid is more credible when the review sticks to what can actually be verified. A 408 hp, 750 Nm Hi4-T specification, 37.1 kWh battery, four-wheel drive and substantial off-road hardware already give the vehicle enough to talk about.

There is no need to add invented Liwa testing, exact cabin-noise comparisons, guaranteed Dubai EV range, resale percentages or personal fuel-savings claims.

For UAE buyers, the biggest question is currently availability. Until the Tank 400 joins the authorised GWM UAE range, every local example should be treated as a vehicle whose source market, warranty and support need to be checked individually.

I’m honestly surprised by that 105 km real-world EV range in Dubai heat. Most plug-in hybrids I’ve seen barely manage 40–60 km with AC running. Are you sure it holds up after a few months of ownership?

      September 27, 2025 at 6:22 am

Totally fair point. That’s exactly why I logged my usage. Even with AC blasting and long Sheikh Zayed commutes, I consistently see 100–105 km in EV-only mode. The secret is the 37.1 kWh pack—it’s closer to a small EV battery than a typical hybrid one. The thermal management system really helps too; after 8 months, degradation has been minimal compared to rivals like the Jeep 4xe.

199k AED price tag with 408 hp?? That’s crazy value compared to Prado or GLC. What’s the catch?

    • Mr.Amin
      September 27, 2025 at 6:30 am

Honestly the only ‘catch’ is badge perception. Some folks still hesitate on Chinese SUVs. But spec-for-spec, it beats most rivals here in power, tech, and even warranty length

That ‘silent crawl mode’ sounds wild. So you’re telling me you can actually climb or descend dunes in EV-only without even touching the pedal?

    • Mr.Amin
      September 27, 2025 at 6:26 am

Exactly. It locks the speed around 5–8 km/h and just lets the motors handle torque control. Honestly, it feels like cheating compared to feathering the throttle in a regular 4×4. Super useful on sandy descents where one wrong jab on the pedal usually means digging yourself out.

Wait… rear seats have ventilation too? Didn’t even get that in my BMW X5

      September 27, 2025 at 6:32 am

Yup, front AND rear. Plus the triple acoustic glass makes highway drives whisper quiet. I compared it side by side with an RX 500h—Tank came out quieter at 120 km/h

199k AED for 408 hp and over 100 km real EV range is insane value. How’s the hybrid gearbox holding up in Dubai’s heat? I’ve seen CVTs struggle badly here.

    • Mr.Amin
      September 29, 2025 at 6:24 am

Exactly why the 9HAT gearbox feels like a game changer. After months of use, shifts are crisp even under desert load. Unlike CVTs, it doesn’t overheat or whine, and the cooling system keeps it stable even during dune climbs

Wow, that’s a seriously detailed breakdown. I’m impressed by how the Tank 400 PHEV stacks up against German SUVs—especially with that 105 km real EV range in Dubai heat. But do you actually feel the transition between the turbo engine and the e-motors when pushing it on Sheikh Zayed Road, or is it seamless like you described?

    • Mr.Amin
      October 1, 2025 at 12:44 pm

It’s almost seamless. On hard acceleration, the electric motors fill the torque gap so you don’t notice the usual turbo lag at all. The only time you ‘feel’ the handoff is under heavy throttle at higher speeds—there’s a slight growl from the engine as it kicks in, but no jerkiness. It actually feels smoother than a GLC 300e I tested last year.

Exactly! Boxy stance but with better aero than Tank 500 — about 0.02 Cd lower.

Where did you buy the vehicle, I believe it’s still not available with the dealer, so no warranty also right?
